Safe Haven Pet Rescue, a non-profit, was opened in 1998. It is located at 1001 1/2 1st Ave SE

Rochester, MN 55904. Safe Haven has a shelter for abandoned, lost or feral cats and keep dogs in foster homes. Their email is safehavencat@yahoo.com. Its shelter hours are Monday – Friday: 12 pm – 5 pm and Saturday – Sunday: 12 pm – 4 pm. Safe Haven volunteers hold various fundraisers, including a large rummage sale at the fairgrounds and motorcycle run, to raise funds and also receive funding from private donors and grants.

While there is not an immediate need for more volunteers, Safe Haven is looking for additional space for storing rummage sale items prior to the sale and they could also use flat sheets and food or litter donations.

For more information its Website is https://safehavenpetrescue.com/ and there is also a Facebook page.

  1. Slatterly Park Playground Makeover Project: Cathy Clermont and Caitlin Doran

There was discussion on proposed methods to improve the physical condition of the Slatterly Park playground in order to make it more inviting to families and therefore, increase utilization of the playground and park by families.  Some ideas include petitioning the city or Park Board, reaching out to our Ward 4 representative, making improvements on our own or with the assistance of local businesses, vocational programs, Eagle Scouts or the Redeemer Lutheran Church summer youth group (within legal bounds and with appropriate approvals.

  1. Kmart Park-and -Proposal Update: Caitlin Doran and Cathy Clermont

City Council tabled its decisions regarding designating the proposed Kmart Park and Ride as a Public Park-and-Ride and the corresponding lease between the city and landowner. Negotiations between the city and landowner on the lease continue and will be seen before City Council again this month or next, maybe. The neighborhood’s overall concerns for safety, traffic problems and environmental impact, among others, were noted. There was discussion on a proposed neighborhood strategy where it concerns future interactions/communications with those who have a vested interest in the proposed lot. There were discussions on how to make any short-term use of the property less detrimental to the neighborhood and how to ensure that any long-term use of the area and the area north of it are not detrimental to the overall neighborhood.

If you have thoughts on the proposal, please stay engaged. Send your thoughts to CommunityDevelopment@Rochester.gov or if you prefer, to one of your SPNA Board Member or SlatterlyPark@gmail.com .
